Irises is a painting by the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. It was one of his first works while he was at the asylum at Saint Paul-de-Mausole in Saint-Rmy-de-Provence, France in the last year before his death in 1890.

Each one of Van Gogh's irises is unique. He carefully studied their movements and shapes to create a variety of curved silhouettes bounded by wavy, twisting, and curling lines. The painting's first owner, French art critic Octave Mirbeau, one of Van Gogh's earliest supporters, wrote: "How well he has understood the exquisite nature of flowers!"

Irises, Saint-Remy, 1889, by Vincent Van Gogh (1853 C 1890), depicts the garden of the hospital where he was a recuperating, and was painted a few months before he died. Suffering from depression for most of his life, Van Gogh called this painting the lightning conductor for my illness, because he felt he could keep himself well by continuing to paint. This work, the first he created while he was a patient, was influenced by the strong outlines, unusual angles and unconventional coloring of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Selling only one painting in his lifetime, Van Goghs Irises, Saint-Remy set a world record in 1987 when it sold for $49 million.
